Curator Janet Self talks about the theme: "Identity has a lovely, complex meaning. It invites us to consider things that make us unique, as well as things we share in common with others: singularity and commonality, the individual and the community; how we consider other factors of age, gender, ethnicity, economics, and more. It challenges us to think about Ourselves and ”Others”. My aim is to bring together creative works that can inspire and engage us in considering this idea of Identity."
"I AM" ... WRITERS CALL... To inspire and engage us in considering identity, the Mendocino Coast Writers’
Conference and Flockworks are co-sponsoring a literary art installation and open mic on
January 14th as part of Masks & Mirrors, a month-long celebration of creative work
exploring identity in the series Art@OddFellows, located at the corner of Kasten and
Ukiah Streets in Mendocino. We invite you to submit from one to two hundred words
on the subject, “I am.” Here's how to participate.
1 Write. Follow wherever the words “I am” take you: flash fiction, memoir, poetry, essay, manifesto, or just plain statement. As long as it’s less than two hundred words. You can use the frame on the front of this flyer, or bring your words on the substrate of your choice.
2 Bring your work—the real deal and a copy—to the Odd Fellows Hall, 45101 Ukiah Street, Mendocino on Saturday, January 14th between 4pm-5:30pm. Photographer Mimi Carroll will be there to take your portrait.
3 Watch as your writing with your photo become part of the “I am” wall—a literary art installation by Flockworks, created in real time.
4
Sign up to read your work at that evening’s Open Mic. (That’s what the second copy
is for!) Slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. For the shy among you, don’t worry: reading is optional.
5 Enjoy the rest of the exhibit at Odd Fellows and at other 2nd Saturday venues until Open Mic begins at 6pm.
The “I am” wall will remain on display as part of the Masks & Mirrors exhibit until Sunday, January 29th. This is your chance to take part in a fun, multidisciplinary artistic event that celebrates the diverse identities that make up our community.
