Sidewalk Print with Hands on Fun!

Friday October 2 Noyo Printworks hosts a Sidewalk Printmaking Event from noon to 7, 215 Laurel Street in Ft Bragg.  Activities include Letterpress printing on the Vandercook press, hand printing with a platen press, Sidewalk block printing with a Linoleum roller and mono printing on book pages by hand.  Visitors will have a chance to join in this work as well as design their own simple block print.  “Sidewalk Editions” of prints made by a number of guest artists will be completed and available for purchase.  People can tour the Studio and sign up for upcoming workshops and Studio Groups.  The Sidewalk Printmaking event is part of the Mendocino County-wide Celebration of National Arts & Crafts Week www.mendocinocraftweek.com  Exhibits, demonstrations and special activities are happening all over the County from Oct 2-12.  

Noyo Printworks is a new Community Studio begun under the umbrella of Flockworks, a local nonprofit focused on building community through creativity and best known for the Art@ Odd Fellows exhibit series in Mendocino and creative outreach with schools and children.  Noyo Printworks, led by volunteer artists, is dedicated to learning, teaching and practice of letterpress, print making and book arts.  The Studio welcomes beginners to experienced artists, with workshops and classes, on-going Studio Groups and special exhibits, events and activities.

Community donations of Letterpress, Etching Press, and related equipment got the ball rolling. City of Ft Bragg is helping incubate the start-up in unused space that was the old boy’s locker room of the old Swim Center, now transformed by volunteers into the Print Studio.   A grant from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County funds a prominent outdoor sign and other outreach materials.  The key ingredient, however, are volunteer leaders bringing this all together:  Artist leaders includes Kathy Carl, Florence Ashford, Larry Thomas, Judy Detrick, James Maxwell, Sandy Oppenhiemer, Mary Anderson and Janet Self.  Says Self “We welcome other printmakers and artists who want to add expertise, experience and time to make this work. Sidewalk Print Event is free to the public, noon to 7pm and is part of the 1st Friday Ft Bragg Art Walk.  

Clay Works @OddFellows

A true richness of works in clay by 23 artists offers the contemporary wonders of ATMOSPHERIC FIRINGS.  Ancient firing technics which include Anagama wood, salt, soda, sagger and Raku are beautifully displayed in this informative body of work.

The Exhibit, hosted by the artists, is open Daily September 1- 29:  Opening Reception in on Saturday September 12 from 5-8.  Art@ Odd Fellows is located at the corner of Kasten & Ukiah Streets in Mendocino.

Newest ART@OddFellows 

ART MIX IN MENDOCINO featuring the work of 10 local artists, offers a sophisticated experience of contemporary art making.  Painting, wood work and ceramic  by Harry Cohen, George Gruel,  Krystine Graziano, Lynne Zickerman, Odis Schmidt, and Jo Killan kicks things off and spill into a lively feast of assemblage works by Susan Spencer, Michael Wilson, Raven Mahon, and Spencer Brewer.

The exhibit is open daily 11-5 through August 29. Corner of Kasten & Ukiah Streets in Mendocino Village.

Signs of progress...

Our new sign was just installed for Noyo Printworks, giving a real presence to studio activities now at 215 Laurel St, in the heart of Fort Bragg.  

This space was formerly the Boys Locker Room at the old Swim Center (circa 1917-2009). It has been transformed into a bright, airy working studio for letterpress, printmaking and book arts.  Our thanks to the City of Fort Bragg for this special opportunity to establish this new community creative project. 

Since opening the doors in April, over 400 people have visited the studio and nearly 200 people have signed up with special interest in learning and working in the Studio.  1st Friday Art Walks with hands on activities and exhibits, mini-workshops in lino-cuts printmaking and book arts and Studio Groups in Printmaking, Monoprinting and Letterpress are fostering a lively sense of the creative possibilities in this working studio space. And new classes, workshops and events are being planned for the fall.   

The sign itself speaks to more than just making Noyo Printworks visible to street traffic.  Funding for the sign was made possible from a grant from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County for our 2015-16 Marketing and Outreach project.  The aim is to strengthen our community identity and visibility by adding support for printed materials, signage, and technology. This is groundwork for our on-going strategic development.  


We build community through creativity.  Flockworks was founded as an organizational “frame” for community art & creative initiatives.  We mobilize space, talents, time, and other resources to foster opportunities for people of all ages and experience to share, explore and participate in arts & creativity.  We add visibility and vibrancy to local arts in our Arts@OddFellows Series.  We engage children and young people in vivid art experiences on the playground, in classrooms and many diverse settings.  With public display, this art gives ‘voice’ to the importance of our children.  We contribute our unique creative twist to gatherings and efforts that support other organizations and groups.  We believe these creative threads tie us together as a community, and shape who we are, rather than see art as an endeavor of an exclusive few.

Studio Groups Begin at Noyo Printworks

Ready to get hands-on in the Studio? 

Studio Groups in Letterpress, Printmaking and Mono Printing provide the opportunity to explore work in your area of interest.  Supportive setting with expertise, equipment and materials fosters work on individual projects. Create a Poetry Broadside. Print an edition of a new drypoint plate.  Experiment with mono printing by hand and with a press.  

Each group will reflect the interests and experience of the participants. Studio leader will provide expertise and support.  Open to all, beginner to expert, for those who want to learn and practice in a professional Studio environment. 5 Week session for $100 each group.  Space is limited; new groups, and days may be added.  

Printmakers Studio Group: Tuesdays 11:00-4:00 from June 23 for 5 weeks   For artists who want to progress their knowledge and practice of printing on Sturges etching press as well as hand-rubbing of relief plates (linoleum, woodblock). This is an opportunity for experienced printmakers to enjoy the environment of a shared space rather than working alone. Kathy Carl, experienced printmaker, will be on hand to offer support as needed, and to supervise use of equipment. Limit 4.

Letterpress Studio Group: Thursdays 3-6pm,  5 weeks series begins June 18. Would you like to experience the joy and thrill of letterpress printing? Do you have projects in mind, like a poetry broadside or a handmade book, that you would like to work on, in a relaxed and supportive group setting? Florence Ashford is welcoming beginning to advanced letterpress enthusiasts to come and enjoy working on individual projects in an ongoing print group. Instruction and guidance will be provided based on the needs of each individual and their desired project. Come learn about typesetting, letterpress printing, and layout/assembly for artist books. Beginners are welcome.   Limit 5 (If Thursday fills, will consider a Friday Group)

Mono-Print Studio Group:  Sundays Noon-4pm  5 week series begins June 21. Come explore the fun and artistry of mono-printing with work by hand and with an etching press.  Together, we will consider various methods of creating, printing and evolving images through monoprinting processes.  This is an opportunity, led by artist Janet Self, to explore a new way of working or for experienced artists to continue to expand your work.  Limit 5
