TAKING CHILDREN TO HEART...

Hearts of Children is a large scale children’s creative arts project aiming to include all the young children on the Mendocino Coast.  With each Heart representing a child, imagine over 1,200 personalized hearts hanging on yarn wrapped tree branches. The first Public installation will be part of Mendocino Coast Childrens Fund's 21st Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, September 21 --everyone is welcome!
Die-cut Hearts made of sturdy art-quality paper are ready for children’s artful design.
So far, teachers for about 50 classes from 12 local schools on the Coast have said "YES, we'd like to be part of the project!"

Each child is asked to draw a picture of themselves on one side; the other side can feature something that makes them happy or someone they love.

The Hearts can be done simply with markers, colored pencils or crayons.

Name and age add a special touch.   Teachers ready for more in-depth art can undertake a more complex approach.  The paper can take paint, collage, glitter and other embellishments.  Some older students will also join the project adding personality and sophistication to this simple concept. "From my perspective, there is no art so pure, simple and authentic as a drawing done by a young child. Our project captures that spirit, amplified 1,000 times and brings it together into a unique expression.  The Family Tree  installation will create a powerful visual celebration of what it is to be a child"  says lead artist, Janet Self.

So come to the Party, 1-4pm on Saturday September 21 at the Community Center of Mendocino.  The early part of the afternoon (1-2:30) is aimed at children--cupcakes, face painting, puppets, music, hands on art and more. Then a brief program will highlight the many MCCF's partnerships with schools, community organizations and businesses that make it possible to effectively meet critical needs of children & their families. Music, cupcakes and ice cream will let all of us feel like children!
